ROLE

Operations Manager

CURRENT LOCATION

Amsterdam, NL

HOMETOWN

Raleigh, NC

Hi! I’m Kayla, a proud North Carolinian now residing in Amsterdam where my control freak tendencies have paved a career in operations and project management. When I’m out and about you can see my head bobbing above the crowd goofily smiling while listening to comedy podcasts on the way to my gym and sauna session. And at my comfiest you can find me on the couch soaking up all The Real Housewives drama, hosting dramatic karaoke parties, and scrolling TikTok until my thumb cramps.
Tactic I use when I need to make progress: “What Would Oprah Do?”
My north star since I first saw her on TV at six years old, Oprah stands out as a symbol of strong womanhood. Her business sense reminds me that anything is possible and I can overcome any professional hurdle, while her Super Soul series feeds my spirit.
Current favorite music artist: Roisin Murphy
An artist well beyond her years, she can only be described as an under-appreciated legend. Starting out in the English house scene of the 90s, Roisin has had a resurgence I didn’t appreciate until I saw her in concert last year, where her loud outfits and disco-inspired songs left me in awe. The definition of an Art Pop Icon, you never get the same song or visual twice, and her songs make you feel like you're dancing in the sun on a remote Spanish island.
Recent article that expanded my worldview: Suriname’s Unrest Is a Warning
Suriname, the country where my father was raised, recently saw riots break out throughout the capital after a sharp increase in the cost of living. A developing country left behind during the pandemic, these riots shed light on how the IMF has failed these countries with big promises and no action. After the IMF stopped paying out its loan in March 2022, the people grew hungry for change and stormed government offices as a cry for help and attention, but that worked only for a moment.
Cool fact I learned in the past week: Baby carrots aren’t actually baby-sized carrots.
They’re just fully-grown carrots that have been cut down by a machine. Now baby carrots are a $1 billion business, proving that you don’t need to think harder, just think smarter.
Quote I live by: "You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try." – Dolly Parton
Not only is she America’s sweetheart, she also gives some damn good advice! This quote always reminds me my only limitation is my mind. Everyone has the ability to create their own path and take from this life what they want, you just can’t be afraid to take the plunge!
Controversial opinion I stand by: Below Deck is educational TV.
Below Deck (a reality show about working on super yachts…stay with me) will teach you more about office politics, relationships, and social class structure than an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Show that changed my perspective: The Midnight Gospel
For your existential crises and larger conversations about life. Duncan Trussel’s podcast conversations with guests, from philosophical thought-leaders to his terminally-ill mother, have been visualized into bite-sized discussions accompanied by trippy visuals. Reminding us we’re here for a short time but a good time, and it’ll all be ok.
